Elgin, AZ experienced a late-afternoon to early-evening hail event on August 27, 2026, with peak hail measured at 1.6 inches. The storm moved across multiple notification zones and produced repeated NWS warnings and radar hail detections.
The event began in mid-afternoon and persisted into early evening. NWS warnings were issued repeatedly between 1:14 PM MST and 6:40 PM MST on August 27, 2026, covering the storm's path through Elgin. Two distinct radar-detected hail returns were recorded in the mid- and late-afternoon period. The alert sequence included multiple NWS warning-only notices and two dual-polarization radar detections, indicating hail returned on NEXRAD during the peak convective pulses. The pattern was consistent with a multi-cell hail-producing storm that produced several high-reflectivity cores as it tracked east-northeast across the metro area.
Measured hail reached 1.6 inches in diameter within the Elgin area on August 27. Hail of this size is larger than a US quarter and approaches golf-ball scale. In exposed residential and commercial locations in Elgin, the most likely observable impacts include dents to vehicle body panels, pitted or torn soft roofing materials, and damaged exterior equipment such as air-conditioning condensers. Skylights and older single-pane glass are at elevated risk for cracking where hail concentrated. Several NWS warning-only alerts during the event indicate warnings were issued ahead of radar returns; radar-detected reports confirm at least two periods of elevated hail intensity within the overall track.
Inspect roofs first in areas downtrack from the storm cores. Prioritize photographic documentation of shingle granule loss, torn membrane roofing, and deformation of metal flashing. Record vehicle and equipment damage with clear location data and time-stamped images. Temporary tarping should be applied where openings or soft-roof failures are present to prevent secondary water intrusion.
For claims and repair planning, separate cosmetic dents from structural compromises. Metal panel work and glass replacement often require immediate stabilization followed by a staged repair plan. Coordinate with property owners on visible hail patterns and avoid assumptions about unseen damage; follow-up inspections on attics, HVAC units, and skylights are recommended within 48 to 72 hours.
