Bowdle, SD, Aug 29–30, 2026. A multi-zone thunderstorm produced a peak hail size of 3.59 inches as the event concluded early Aug 30.
The National Weather Service issued 23 alerts for the Bowdle area between 5:24 PM CDT on Aug 29 and 3:28 AM CDT on Aug 30. Sixteen of those alerts included dual-polarization radar detections of hail; seven were NWS warning-only alerts. Early detections began at 5:24 PM CDT (1.5-inch radar detection). Radar-derived hail sizes increased through the evening, with repeated detections above 2.0 inches after 10:20 PM CDT and peak radar-derived returns recorded in the 12:39 AM CDT to 2:45 AM CDT window on Aug 30. The sequence shows a sustained hail-producing core that traversed the Bowdle metro area and adjacent rural zones before weakening prior to 3:30 AM CDT.
Radar detections across the storm ranged from roughly 1.00 to 3.59 inches. Where radar-detected hail exceeded 1.75 inches in the Bowdle area, expect common vehicle panel denting, chipped windshields, and damage to vulnerable siding. In locations within the radar-derived swath showing 2.0–2.75 inches, anticipate concentrated roof shingle loss, broken skylights, and more severe siding and gutter damage. Where the radar-derived footprint registered hail near the 3.59-inch peak, expect the highest probability of structural roof damage, shattered windows, crushed vents, and severe vehicle loss.
Inspectors and adjusters should prioritize properties that lie within the radar-derived larger-hail segments. Document hail size at each property with a standard scale photo, note exact address and time, and record any visual roof shingle loss, exposed underlayment, or broken glazing. Focus initial fieldwork on contiguous clusters of damage within the Bowdle metro and on structures exhibiting clear impact patterns.
Safety and triage first. Conduct an exterior survey from the ground to identify concentrated impact areas before committing crews to roofs. For roofs with suspected 2-inch-plus impact, expect at least three common outcomes: shingle granule loss, broken or displaced shingles, and penetrations to soft underlayment. Temporary tarping is appropriate where decking is exposed. Photograph panels, vents, and fascia with scale reference and assign priority ratings for immediate repair versus scheduled replacement.
Assessments should include vehicles, HVAC units, and solar arrays exposed in the radar-derived swath. Use standardized measurement tools and document measurements in inches. Coordinate with property owners on temporary protections and obtain signed access agreements before starting roof work. Retain samples of damaged materials for claims. For the radar-confirmed hail swath, consult the Strike Map for the paid radar-derived damage zone and hail footprint.
