A severe hail storm tracked through Pittsford, MI on September 4–5, 2026, producing 2.5-inch hail and generating 95 NWS alerts. The system produced multiple radar-detected hail cores and spotter-verified small-hail reports across the metro.
The event began in the late afternoon on September 4 with a series of NWS warning-area alerts beginning at 2:24 PM EDT and continued through the night into the following day. The storm redeveloped over the region and produced a prolonged hail track on September 5 that produced repeated NWS warning-area updates and several radar-detected cores. Dual-polarization radar identified multiple hail cores during the afternoon on September 5, including radar-detected returns corresponding to roughly 1.47–1.75 inches in the mid- to late-afternoon period.
Field observers recorded smaller stones at ground level. At 8:43 AM EDT on September 5 a spotter in Craigsville reported dime-sized hail. At 11:46 AM EDT another observer reported dime-sized hail along Bearwallow Road. At 4:23 PM EDT a spotter reported penny-sized hail along with strong wind at that location. NWS warning-area alerts were predominantly labeled as NWS warning only, while several alerts during the afternoon and early evening were tied to radar-detected hail cores.
The sequence shows a long-lived system that cycled between NWS warning-only alerts and radar-detected hail cores. Radar detections clustered in the late morning through the late afternoon on September 5, with the most intense radar returns occurring in the mid-afternoon window. Ground reports during the same period remained limited to small hail and localized wind observations in the named communities.
Local storm reports and spotter submissions indicate limited surface impact in the immediate Pittsford metro. Observers at Craigsville and along Bearwallow Road reported dime-sized hail during the morning and midday hours, and a spotter at 4:23 PM EDT noted penny-sized hail accompanied by strong wind at that site. There are no field reports in the record documenting widespread structural failures, large-scale vehicle damage, or concentrated property loss tied to this event.
Dual-polarization radar registered stronger hail cores during the afternoon on September 5, including several returns consistent with golf-ball-range hail in isolated radar pixels. Those radar cores did not produce corresponding large-hail ground reports in the available local storm reports. Wind was noted in at least one spotter submission, and localized limb and small-tree damage should be suspected where strong gusts coincided with hail observations.
Surface effects observed on this storm are specific to the reported locations: dime- and penny-sized hail in Craigsville and along Bearwallow Road, and a spotter-verified strong wind observation tied to the 4:23 PM EDT entry. Any inspection or loss estimate should reference those times and locations and include photographic documentation tied to site coordinates.

Try the Free Demo →Inspect roofs, vehicles, and soft metals in the Pittsford metro with priority on Craigsville and Bearwallow Road. Field reports showed penny- to dime-sized hail at those points. Even where reports show smaller stones, radar-detected cores passed through the broader area during the mid- and late-afternoon window on September 5. Expect isolated locations with larger impacts; check hail-sensitive materials such as asphalt shingles, vinyl siding, painted metal, skylights, and soft-top vehicles.
Document all findings with dated photos and GPS coordinates. Where possible, take close-up and wide-angle photos, note elevations and exposures, and record any evidence of concentric cracking, bruising, or perforation on metal panels. Because a spotter reported strong wind at 4:23 PM EDT, include gutter, soffit, and tree-impact inspections at sites reporting both hail and wind. Note instances where wind-driven debris could mimic hail impact patterns.
For estimating repairs, use localized measurements rather than assuming uniform hail size across the metro. Field reports provide the ground-truth baseline for Craigsville and Bearwallow Road; radar detections identify where larger cores passed but do not replace on-site measurement. Coordinate inspection routes to cover the radar swath axis during the mid-afternoon period and prioritize structures with known exposure.
For a radar-confirmed hail footprint and the paid damage zone overlay, refer to the Strike Map for the radar-confirmed hail swath.
