A hail-producing storm tracked through Estherville, Iowa, on September 6, 2026, producing stones up to 2.22 inches and a concentrated radar-detected hail swath across the metro.
A sequence of 33 NWS alerts spanned from mid-morning into late evening on September 6, beginning with a radar-detected report at 10:45 AM CDT and continuing through an 11:29 PM CDT warning-only alert. The event intensified in the late afternoon and early evening with multiple dual-polarization radar detections showing elevated hail sizes. Notable radar-detected returns included 1.6 inches around 3:45 PM CDT, 2.06 inches at 6:56 PM CDT, and another 2.06-inch detection at 9:26 PM CDT, supplemented by several other radar-detected reports between those times. Many intervening NWS warning-area alerts reported smaller hail sizes without radar confirmation.
Field observers provided on-the-ground detail in the early evening window. At 6:33 PM CDT and 6:38 PM CDT, mPING and public reports recorded quarter-sized stones in the central metro. At 6:57 PM CDT a spotter described "Picture ping pong ball hail north of Exit 68 on I-35," with the submitter estimating time from radar. Those spotter-verified observations align with the radar-detected hail swath that crossed the I-35 corridor and adjacent Estherville neighborhoods during the 6:30–7:00 PM CDT period.
Local Storm Reports and public submissions documented surface impacts concentrated along the I-35 corridor north of Exit 68 and within the Estherville metro. The three spotter-verified entries in this dataset recorded hail on the interstate corridor and in the central metro; none of the provided Local Storm Reports in this collection included descriptions of structural collapse or large-area catastrophic loss. The 6:57 PM CDT spotter observation explicitly located significant stone impacts north of Exit 68 on I-35. The two mPING quarter-size reports at 6:33 PM CDT and 6:38 PM CDT overlap the same central metro footprint identified by radar.
Observed signatures to expect along the reported track include concentrated vehicle panel dents and localized roofing bruising where quarter-size and larger stones were reported. Reports and radar echoes indicate the highest impact density along the mapped hail swath that tracked across the interstate and through the downtown-perimeter zone. Claim adjusters and field teams operating in those corridors should assume a non-uniform pattern of damage, with focused clusters near the strongest radar returns and the spotter locations cited above.
Prioritize inspections on properties within the radar-detected swath and along I-35 north of Exit 68. Start with vehicle fleets and parked cars in public lots adjacent to the interstate and in downtown Estherville. Photograph vehicle roofs, hoods, and glass with time-stamped images. Record exact locations and reference the 6:33–6:57 PM CDT window when spotter reports and radar returns overlapped.

Try the Free Demo →For roofing crews, inspect for localized shingle bruising, granular loss, and hairline fractures to asphalt tabs consistent with impacts reported at the site coordinates. Check skylights, HVAC unit housings, and vinyl siding on structures facing the interstate corridor. Document findings with close-up and contextual photos, note compass-facing exposures, and include a brief narrative that ties observations to the spotter times and the radar-detected corridor.
For claims and remediation planning, combine spotter-verified report locations with the NWS warning-area polygons issued that evening when assembling scopes. Field notes should cite the spotter submissions at 6:33 PM CDT, 6:38 PM CDT, and 6:57 PM CDT, and note the radar-detected periods of elevated hail at 6:56 PM CDT and 9:26 PM CDT.
Consult the Strike Map to view the radar-confirmed hail swath and delineated damage zone for this event.
