Alert issued Fri, Sep 11 · 10:52 PM UTC
Escalante, UT – September 11, 2026. A late-afternoon severe storm produced 2.22-inch hail detected by dual-polarization NEXRAD, moving through the Escalante metro area.
The storm moved through in the late afternoon and triggered one NWS warning area. The NWS warning area was issued at 4:52 PM MDT and covered the Escalante zone. The alert referenced large hail detected by dual-polarization radar and a single radar-derived hail report for the zone. Radar returns showed a concentrated hail echo along the storm track as it passed northeastward through the metro.
This is a single-zone, concluded event. No subsequent NWS alerts were issued for the same track after the 4:52 PM MDT warning area. The radar signature indicated a discrete core with strong reflectivity values consistent with significant hail production during the brief late-afternoon pulse.
Hail reaching 2.22 inches can produce substantial impact on vulnerable surfaces. Unprotected vehicles are at high risk of panel denting and broken trim. Asphalt shingle roofs can suffer granule loss, blistering, and accelerated wear that may lead to exposed substrate on older roofing systems. Skylights, roof-mounted HVAC components, and solar panels are susceptible to cracking or pitting at this size.
Landscaping and soft materials typically see localized defoliation and torn greenhouse plastic. Smaller secondary hail around the core can still dent metal gutters and garage doors. There were no ground-verified public reports attached to the radar detection in the alert record; assessors should confirm field conditions before estimating repair scope or cost.
Prioritize safety and documentation. Inspect roofs from a secure vantage before committing crews to ladder or roof work. Photograph overall roof condition and close-ups of suspected impact points. Note azimuth and distance from known landmarks to help correlate field damage to the radar hail swath. Check vehicles, skylights, solar arrays, HVAC units, and gutters for concentrated impact on the north- and east-facing exposures where hail accumulation was most likely during the late-afternoon approach.
For temporary repairs, use industry-standard tarp techniques and fasteners rated for local wind loading. Secure loose debris and protect interior spaces where punctures or leaks are suspected. Provide clients with dated photo logs and a concise scope of visible damage to assist insurance submissions. Schedule comprehensive roof and panel inspections within 7 to 14 days to quantify granule loss and structural compromise.
