Elgin, NE experienced a multi-zone severe thunderstorm on September 11, 2026, producing a peak 1.66-inch hail core during an evening to late-night event. The storm generated four NWS severe thunderstorm warnings as it moved through the metro.
The storm produced a series of NWS warnings from late evening into the night. Warnings were issued at 8:25 PM CDT, 9:03 PM CDT, 11:02 PM CDT, and 11:27 PM CDT on September 11. Reported hail sizes in the warnings ranged from 0.75 inch to 1.00 inch. Each advisory carried NWS warning only confidence. The storm track moved across multiple local zones within the Elgin metro before concluding after 11:27 PM CDT. Radar reflectivity showed elevated cores consistent with hail-producing updrafts during the warning period.
The event produced hail up to a size just under the golf-ball threshold on the NWS object scale. Hail in this size range commonly causes dents to unprotected vehicle panels and can fracture older or brittle roofing materials. Vinyl siding and skylight glazing are vulnerable to pitting and cracks when struck by larger hailstones. Outdoor equipment, exposed HVAC units, and unsecured garden structures may show surface damage or broken components after a storm with these sizes.
Not every property in the warning area will be affected. Damage severity depends on exposure, roofing age, and whether vehicles or equipment were parked under cover. Where hail impacted softer roofing materials, expect granule loss and accelerated wear. Where glass was hit directly, expect chipped or shattered panes rather than superficial marking.
Inspect roofs and vehicles promptly. Prioritize inspections within 24 to 72 hours for locations inside the NWS warning area. Start with visible roofing defects such as bruising, granule loss, and cracked or missing shingles. Check roof-mounted equipment, gutters, and flashing for impact damage. Photograph all findings with location tags and capture representative wide-angle and close-up shots.
Document and triage repairs. For roofing, categorize work as emergency tarping, temporary patching, or full replacement based on visible structural compromise. For vehicles and exterior glass, note chips versus full breaks and record serials or identifying marks on affected equipment. Provide clients a clear timeline for temporary protection and permanent repairs. Coordinate with adjusters and submit time-stamped photographic evidence when requested.
