Seboyeta, NM experienced late-afternoon hail on September 17, 2026, with peak stones to 1.75 inches (golf ball). The event concluded in the early evening.
The storm produced two NWS warning areas over the Seboyeta metro on September 17. The first warning was issued at 4:59 PM MDT when dual-polarization NEXRAD detected 1.0-inch hail-size returns within the warning area. A second warning followed at 5:47 PM MDT after continued radar-detected 1.0-inch returns along the storm track. Dual-polarization radar provided the hail detection data used to map the event. Activity moved generally east-southeast through the warning area and tapered off in the early evening.
Hail reached golf ball size in portions of the warning area. Golf ball impacts commonly dent vehicle body panels and crack or puncture soft roofing materials. Asphalt shingles show granule loss and surface bruising that can accelerate wear. Skylights, solar panels, and exposed glass are at elevated risk for cracking from impacts of this magnitude.
Where radar returned 1.0-inch signatures during the warning phase, expect widespread cosmetic damage to metal and vinyl siding and denting to unsecured outdoor equipment. Roofs with prior wear or older single-layer asphalt shingles are more likely to need section repairs or full replacement. Agricultural exposures such as high-value orchard fruit or unprotected seedlings may show localized loss where the largest hail fell.
Safety first. Confirm access routes and overhead hazard clearance before walking roofs. Document roof and vehicle conditions with dated photos and notes. Log the presence of dented HVAC units, crushed gutters, broken skylights, and any displaced solar modules. Keep samples of damaged shingle sections and note granule loss. Coordinate with property owners on insurance contacts and adjuster scheduling prior to major repairs.
For repairs, prioritize moisture intrusion mitigation. Temporary tarps are appropriate only after a documented inspection and safe anchoring. Inspect for punctures versus bruising to determine whether spot repairs or replacement is required. For solar roofs, coordinate with a certified PV technician before rooftop work. Provide itemized estimates that separate roof system replacement from ancillary repairs such as HVAC covers, siding, and glass replacement.
