Piñon, New Mexico experienced a multi-zone thunderstorm on September 24, 2026 that produced hail up to 1.56 inches in diameter during the late afternoon into early evening. The event is concluded.
The storm developed during the late afternoon and produced a sequence of NWS alert areas across the Piñon metro. Two alerts are associated with this event. The first alert was issued at 2:45 PM MDT and was based on dual-polarization radar detection indicating 1.00-inch hail. The second alert was issued at 5:48 PM MDT and was described as NWS warning only for 1.00-inch hail. The storm track progressed from west to east through the Piñon metro during the late-afternoon–early-evening period. Radar analysis and post-event aggregation classified this page as a multi-zone aggregate storm report covering the combined alert areas.
Measured peak hail reached 1.56 inches in diameter within the storm track through Piñon. Hail at and above this size commonly causes dents to vehicle body panels and can crack or shatter skylights and single-pane windows. Asphalt shingles that were already aged or compromised are at elevated risk of granule loss and bruise-type damage. Exterior soft metals, outdoor HVAC units, and exposed instruments may show impact marks or deformation from impacts in this size range.
If visible damage is present on vehicles, roofing, or siding in the Piñon area, document location and time with dated photos. Retain original receipts for recent roof work and record previous roof condition where possible. These observations will assist adjusters and repair contractors when assessing the scope of repairs linked to the September 24 event.
Prioritize inspections for properties located inside the two NWS alert areas issued at 2:45 PM MDT and 5:48 PM MDT. Start with vehicles and exposed equipment, then move to roofing and exterior envelope inspections. For roofs, perform a hands-on or close-up photographic survey to identify bruising, missing granules, and cracked shingles. Note the distribution of impacts across the roof plane rather than assuming uniform damage.
Document all findings with time-stamped photos and a simple map showing the property relative to the alert areas. Provide clients an itemized list of observed damage and immediate stabilization steps where needed. Coordinate with insurers using the alert timestamps and radar-derived details to clarify the event timeline.
