Alert issued Mon, Sep 28 · 12:54 AM UTC
Del Rio, Texas experienced severe hail on September 27, 2026, producing peak stones of 1.48 inches across the metro. The event was short-lived and concluded the same evening.
A single severe thunderstorm moved through the Del Rio metro in the early evening of September 27. The National Weather Service issued one alert at 7:54 PM CDT reporting 1.25-inch hail detected by dual-polarization radar. Radar returns showed compact hail cores translating northeast across the populated portions of the metro. No additional NWS alerts were issued for this cell after the 7:54 PM CDT product. Field reports did not change the storm status; the event is listed as concluded for the Del Rio zone.
Hail in the roughly 1.25–1.5-inch range that affected Del Rio is capable of producing localized damage to common residential and vehicle surfaces. Expect denting to unprotected vehicle panels, pitting and granule loss on asphalt shingles, and surface abrasion to vinyl siding and soft metals. Skylights and older polycarbonate roofing are at elevated risk of cracking where hail density was highest. Roofs showing concentrated granule loss or bruising around fasteners should be prioritized for inspection to limit subsequent water intrusion.
Addresses within the NWS alert polygon at 7:54 PM CDT experienced the greatest radar returns and therefore the highest likelihood of observable impacts. There were no widespread catastrophic failures reported in the immediate aftermath. Contractors should record observed hail sizes, density of impacts, and location of any through-penetration points for scope and insurance documentation.
Triage inspections should start with a drive-by survey of properties inside the NWS warning area and near the radar-detected hail cores noted at 7:54 PM CDT. Use geotagged photographs to capture roof fields, ridge lines, and areas downwind of tree cover. Prioritize roofs with visible granule displacement, cracked or missing shingles, dented gutters, and damaged HVAC condensers. For vehicles, focus on fleet or curbside exposures that were likely parked during the early evening event.
For repairs, stabilize any exposed areas to prevent water entry before conducting a full assessment. Maintain ladder and fall protection protocols on inspections. Document all findings with timestamped imagery and measured hail-size references where possible. Coordinate estimates with insurer requirements and prepare separate line items for roof, siding, solar panels, and mechanical equipment when damage is observed.
