A hail-producing storm tracked through Freeman, SD on October 8–9, 2026, producing 2.52-inch stones and multiple radar-detected alerts and spotter reports. The event ran from early evening into the overnight hours and included repeated rounds of hail across the warning area.
The sequence began in the early evening when dual-polarization radar detected hail near Freeman at 6:58 PM CDT on October 8, followed by an NWS warning at 7:34 PM CDT. The storm re-intensified through late evening with a string of radar-detected hail alerts between about 9:20 PM and 11:10 PM CDT. Radar-derived detections during that window recorded hail signatures growing through the 1.25–1.76-inch range, and NWS warning-only messages were issued intermittently as the warning area evolved.
Spotter submissions and social media photos tracked with the radar picture. Around 10:05 PM CDT, social media photos showed ping pong ball-sized hail in the region, a detail later repeated by broadcast media relays near Panora. Wall Lake, Iowa, provided an estimated half dollar-sized hail report just after 10:20 PM CDT. Multiple observers reported a second round of hail late in the evening, with a second set of social media posts time-stamped around 11:18 PM CDT. The storm continued into the early morning with additional radar-detected hail alerts and spotter posts through 2:44 AM CDT on October 9.
Thirty NWS alerts were issued for the event window, with the majority derived from dual-polarization radar detections and a subset noted as NWS warning only. The combined radar and spotter record shows repeated convective pulses crossing Freeman and adjacent communities, producing multiple discrete rounds rather than a single continuous swath.
Field reports and publicly posted photos show widespread yard- and vehicle-level impacts in and around Freeman, Panora, and Wall Lake. Social media images from the Freeman area and nearby observers repeatedly show ping pong ball-sized hail on lawns and driveways. Broadcast and delayed social media submissions reported half dollar-sized hail at Wall Lake and quarter-sized hail via mPING in the earlier evening.
Observers reported at least two distinct rounds in populated areas. A spotter-verified second round at 11:18 PM CDT was noted in social posts from the same general corridor that reported earlier hail. The pattern of repeated impacts increases the likelihood of cumulative surface damage in locations where vehicles or soft roofing were exposed across rounds. The Radar record aligns with these spotter reports, showing multiple hail-producing cores tracking along similar paths through the local warning area.
No single publicly filed local storm report described structural collapse or catastrophic building failure. Reports are limited to hail-size observations and time-stamped imagery. Contractors and insurers should rely on on-site inspection to quantify glass breakage, panel dents, shingle bruising, or localized landscaping loss in the Freeman–Panora–Wall Lake corridor.

Try the Free Demo →Prioritize inspections in Freeman and along the line between Panora and Wall Lake. Start with photographic documentation of pre-repair conditions and timestamped images of vehicles, roofs, siding, and skylights. Because spotters reported at least two rounds, inspect for cumulative damage: look for hairline fractures in asphalt shingles, dimpling on metal panels, and repeated impact patterns on vehicular paint that can be missed on a single pass.
Use a triage approach. Identify properties with large exposed vehicles, flat-roof components, and homes that received multiple social media reports. For roofs, perform a close-up walk-by first to mark suspect shingles and then a safe rooftop inspection when required. For siding and HVAC units, check for surface pitting and bent fins. Document all findings with scale and close-up photos and log the local report times for each property file.
Communicate expected timelines clearly to property owners in the Freeman warning area. If temporary tarping is needed, prioritize structures that show open seams, broken skylights, or visible interior leaks. Coordinate with adjusters using the spotter-verified timestamps and the radar-detected sequence to support loss timing and multi-round impact claims.
