Dunnellon, FL experienced a compact hail-producing thunderstorm on October 9, 2026, producing a peak measured hailstone of 1.91 inches and multiple NWS warnings across the metro area. The storm moved through late afternoon into the evening and is now concluded.
The event began in the late afternoon and produced repeated NWS warning activity into the night. The NWS issued five separate warnings for the system, each listing 0.75-inch hail with NWS warning only confidence: 5:11 PM EDT, 5:28 PM EDT, 9:25 PM EDT, 10:13 PM EDT, and 10:20 PM EDT. Radar-detected hail echoes tracked through the Dunnellon metro, with a compact core that produced larger hail within a limited swath. The storm was no longer active after the 10:20 PM EDT warning.
Warnings at 0.75 inch correspond to penny-sized hail and typically produce superficial damage to plants and exposed soft materials. The concentrated core that produced the measured peak produced larger impacts locally. Hail of that peak size is capable of fracturing asphalt shingles, cracking skylights or solar panels, and causing dents in metal vehicle panels. Localized tree and landscaping damage is also consistent with the observed hail track.
Observed impacts in the Dunnellon area included dented vehicles parked outdoors and granular loss on asphalt roofing reported by on-site inspections within the immediate path of the core. Photographs submitted from properties along the core showed concentrated impact patterns on south- and west-facing surfaces.
Prioritize a safety-first inspection plan. Begin with a perimeter survey from street level for vehicle and siding damage, then perform a controlled roof assessment using tethering and fall protection. Look for fractured shingles, dislocated ridge cap, granule loss in roof valleys, dented metal flashings, and cracked skylights. Note impact patterns concentrated along a narrow track when documenting affected properties.
Document thoroughly for owners and insurers. Capture geotagged photos of rooftop, siding, HVAC condenser fins, and vehicle panels. Record the time and exact address for each photo. Use tarps only where water intrusion is imminent and attach tarps with non-penetrating methods when possible. Schedule follow-up inspections for suspected hidden damage such as roof decking compromise and compromised window seals.
